Safety-Tested Handling Systems for Aerospace & Launch Operations

Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and specialized handling systems move critical aerospace assets safely between fabrication, assembly, test, and logistics phases. Metro Precision Engineering Works engineers heavy-duty transport dollies, engine stands, wing handling cradles, fuselage rotation fixtures, and customized rigs for rocket stage maneuvering — each designed to client load cases, centre-of-gravity envelopes, and facility interface constraints.

Unlike catalogue material handling products, aerospace GSE must satisfy dynamic load factors during towing, jack failure scenarios, seismic considerations in certain installations, and human factors standards for maintenance crews working at height. Our structural fabrication team delivers welded frames with certified weld procedures, magnetic particle or dye penetrant inspection when specified, and load test documentation.

Structural Design Criteria

Design begins with mass properties analysis and factor-of-safety targets agreed with client structural engineering. We select structural steel sections, castor ratings, jack capacities, and locking mechanisms from reputable industrial suppliers — never undersized for theoretical minimum loads. Finite stiffness prevents component flexure that could induce stress into delicate airframe sections during handling.

For space launch applications, GSE interfaces with vehicle umbilical panels, fairing separation hardware, and clean-room floor loading limits. We incorporate non-marring contact surfaces, conductive grounding paths where electrostatic discharge is a concern, and corrosion-resistant finishes for outdoor storage.

Fabrication & Testing

Welding is performed by qualified personnel using WPS/PQR documentation traceable to client approval lists. Post-weld machining ensures bearing surfaces and locator pads meet flatness requirements. Castors and lifting points are proof-loaded where contracts mandate, with third-party witness available.

Paint systems include industrial enamel, zinc primer systems, or powder coat finishes depending on environment class. Identification plates specify rated load, serial number, design revision, and inspection due dates — essential for regulated maintenance tracking.

Logistics Support Integration

GSE does not exist in isolation. We coordinate interface dimensions with facility doors, crane hook heights, AGV pathways, and adjacent tooling already deployed on the client floor. Our 14+ years supporting aerospace integrators informs practical details — clearance for operator walk paths, visibility of alignment marks during low-light conditions, and quick-release mechanisms that do not compromise safety interlocks.

  • Component transport dollies and engine handling stands
  • Airframe rotation and positioning fixtures
  • Launch vehicle stage support and integration rigs
  • Load-tested structural fabrication with certified welding

Our structural engineers collaborate with client facility teams on floor loading surveys, tow path simulations, and crane pick plans before fabrication release — preventing costly rework when GSE arrives on site. Documentation packages include as-built drawings, weld maps, and maintenance schedules suitable for regulated operator audits.
